encouragement and a knowledge that individuals in the group were thinking about me and praying for me outside of the group. the biggest killer for accountability in my mind is when people restrict it to only that time-- it becomes a confession with everyone else in the group being the priest. "yes, yes, that's difficult" then they pray for each other there and leave and don't think about it till next week.

The most uplifting small group experiences I've had have been really pursuing something someone in the group is dealing with on my own in the scripture or having someone come to me and say "hey i was thinking about you this week and found these verses that I thought would be encouraging for you to think about etc."

I would agree. I've never only had one accountability group that I thought was helpful, and even that one started to deteriorate. I think his point that there is a lack of "yes!" or focus on the mission is the main problem. It seems like accountability is one of the first things that Christians default to making a part of their regular schedule-- it seems to me like serving in some capacity should fill this role instead.

Yeah, I read Metzger's book "The Text of the New Testament" in seminary. It sounds like a book that is going to be boring and painful to read, but it is actually very good. I truly enjoyed it and agree that every Christian should read it.

Phillip's example of evangelism is awesome and beautiful, no doubt! But his is not the only example of evangelism in the New Testament. We also see Peter and Paul preaching to vast crowds of people. They do not always take time to meet each individual and give them personal time and attention.

Of course the personal relationship with other believers has to happen eventually. And it may even be true, I would agree, that personal, relational evangelism is most commonly effective. But it's not an either/or situation. All people need someone to join them in their journey, as you put it. But some people may also need to hear the plain truth suddenly and have it hit them between the eyes.

Also, I completely agree that as believers we should not act superior, arrogant or condescending towards nonbelievers. Any Christian who has a clear understanding of his own sinfulness and utter need for unmerited grace will have no problem treating nonbelievers on an equal level. And yet, we DO have something that they do not have, we DO have something to offer them which is better than what they have.

Remembering that it is God who quickens the heart of an unbeliever - we are merely his tools, his hands and his feet. And so while we should be prayerful, discerning, loving and winsome in whatever "methods" we use, we should recognize that the Spirit of God may guide people to evangelize in a variety of ways. That was my only point - not disagreeing with you or intending to be contentious!
